What is the mission of the Bio-Link Depot?
Our mission is to present the largest quantity of the most useful biotech supplies to the largest possible number of science teachers. We want to make sure schools have the tools to train their students, and to provide this service for free.
Where are you located?
We are located in the San Francisco City College Aeronautics Building adjacent to the San Francisco International Airport. Click here for a map —-> Depot Map
How can I help the Bio-Link Depot in its mission?
The best thing you can do to help the depot is to volunteer. We need people with expertise to help sort and inventory shipments. We need muscle to help move shipments, and we especially need teachers and departments with trucks. You can also pass on the word to companies that have surplus equipment. Nearly every company is short on space and and holding gear in storage.
Who qualifies for free donated equipment and how do I apply for access?
Anyone affiliated with an educational institution qualifies. We also encourage teachers to bring a valid school ID whenever they come to visit.
How much equipment can we take if we qualify?
We encourage you to take as much as you need to equip your classes and research, as long as you leave some behind for others. Take what you need, not what you can carry!
Can recipients give donations?
Yes, recipients can donate. We encourage teachers and institutions that have more gear than they need to give it to us, and we will donate it to other recipients
What types of equipment and supplies do you distribute?
The answer is a huge variety of equipment and supplies. We have consumables such as pipette tips, filtration products, microplates, microscope slides, specialty glass, plastic bottles/vials. And equipment such as hot plates, stirring motors, centrifuges, microscopes, shakers, water baths, vortexes, power supplies, pipettors , biosafety cabinets and autoclaves. There are many more items that can be listed and our inventory changes with every Open House.
Can you reserve equipment or supplies?
Currently, we do not have a reservation system in place. We hope to launch a system for certain high-value items (with your help) in 2016/17.
Does the Bio-Link Depot provide transportation for equipment?
We do provide pickup of equipment from donors, but recipients of free supplies must provide their own vehicles.
